Osmosed water is often perceived as "too pure." This common misconception is worth examining closely.

What is pure water?

The first parameter to check is the total dissolved solids (TDS) level. TDS expresses the solid particles collected after water evaporation at 180°C. It is expressed in PPM (parts per million) or in mg/litre.

TDS should be less than 100 mg/l. The ideal is between 10 and 60 mg/l.

Why is low TDS water better for your health?

Water with a TDS between 10 and 60 mg/l is considered healthier for several reasons:

1. Fewer contaminants

Low TDS generally means fewer harmful substances in your water:

  • Heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic) that can accumulate in the body and cause toxicity.
  • Industrial pollutants (nitrates, fluorides, pesticides) with long-term detrimental effects on health.
  • Excess salts that contribute to water hardness and can cause kidney stress or hypertension.

2. Less stress on the kidneys

With low TDS, the kidneys work less to eliminate excess salts or contaminants. Thanks to the principle of osmosis, contaminants in the blood (high TDS) are more easily transferred to the pure water ingested (low TDS). This reduces the risk of kidney stones and problems related to mineral accumulation.

3. Promotes detoxification

Low TDS water has a greater capacity to absorb and eliminate toxins from the body. It acts like a clean slate, supporting the body's natural detoxification processes.

4. Better hydration

Low TDS water has a neutral and pleasant taste, which encourages more regular consumption. Good hydration is essential for digestion, body temperature regulation, and nutrient absorption.

5. Reduced risk of over-mineralization

Excessive consumption of minerals from overly mineralized water can lead to:

  • Mineral deposits in joints, tissues, or organs.
  • Electrolyte imbalances affecting blood pressure, heart health, or metabolic functions.

Does reverse osmosis remove essential minerals?

This is the most frequent question — and the answer deserves nuance.

In reality, minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium) contained in water are only assimilated by the human body in very small quantities. The reason lies in bioavailability: the nutritional power of an element depends primarily on its molecular structure.

Humans are heterotrophic organisms: we cannot produce our organic matter from raw mineral matter. This is the role of plants, autotrophic organisms. To absorb bioavailable minerals, we must obtain them through plant-based foods.

Water is therefore not a significant source of minerals for the body. Its role is primarily to purify, hydrate, and transport nutrients from food to the cells. Overly mineralized water, on the other hand, can overload the body and promote the appearance of stones or thrombosis.
