Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers here to the most common questions about reverse osmosis, choosing the right model, installation, and maintenance.
Reverse osmosis
What is an RO system and how does it work?
A reverse osmosis system is a filtration system that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane. This membrane retains dissolved impurities: chlorine, nitrates, heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria. Only water molecules pass through. The result: pure, fresh water for drinking and cooking.
What are the benefits of a reverse osmosis system?
A reverse osmosis system allows you to:
- eliminate up to 99% of contaminants (chlorine, heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, etc.);
- improve the taste and smell of water;
- reduce limescale buildup in household appliances;
- produce high-quality drinking water at home.
What is the difference between a reverse osmosis system and a classic filter (ultrafilter)?
An ultrafilter removes contaminants down to 0.01 microns: sediments, bacteria and other impurities up to a certain point. Heavy metals, nitrates and some chemicals (including PFAS) are not filtered.
An osmosis system filters down to 0.0001 microns, which guarantees the removal of up to 99% of contaminants.
What is the difference between an RO system and a water softener?
A water softener primarily reduces calcium and magnesium to prevent limescale deposits. It does not remove impurities, heavy metals, or bacteria.
A reverse osmosis system removes all of these contaminants. The two systems can be used together if necessary.
Is RO water drinkable and safe?
Yes. Reverse osmosis filtration guarantees pure water, free from harmful substances, which is healthier than unfiltered tap water.
Is reverse osmosis water ideal for cooking, coffee, or tea?
Yes. By removing taste-altering chlorine and impurities, reverse osmosis water significantly improves the taste of coffee, tea, and cooked dishes.
Does a reverse osmosis system remove fluoride and chlorine?
Yes. The reverse osmosis membrane effectively removes fluoride, chlorine, and other contaminants for healthier, better-tasting water.
Choosing Your Reverse Osmosis System
How to choose your reverse osmosis system?
The choice mainly depends on the size of your household, the desired flow rate, and the space available under the sink. The Reverse Osmosis Systems page allows you to compare NANO, SMART, and FLOW and find the most suitable model. If you are unsure, you can also contact us for advice.
What is the difference between NANO, SMART, and FLOW?
All three models use the same reverse osmosis technology with remineralization. The difference lies in the flow rate and footprint.
- The NANO is the most compact (1.4 L/min), suitable for one or two people with limited under-sink space.
- The SMART is versatile (1.6 L/min), ideal for 2 to 4 people.
- The FLOW offers the highest flow rate (3.1 L/min), recommended for large families or intensive use.
Do I need a reverse osmosis system with remineralization?
Remineralization is included as standard on all Aquacycle undersink reverse osmosis systems (NANO, SMART, FLOW). It enriches filtered water with calcium, magnesium, and potassium, for a balanced and pleasant-tasting result.
What is NOMAD and what makes it different?
The NOMAD is a self-contained reverse osmosis water dispenser. Unlike undersink reverse osmosis systems, it requires no plumbing connection: only a standard electrical outlet is needed. It filters water and allows you to choose the temperature: ambient, lukewarm, hot, or boiling.
Can you install an under-sink reverse osmosis system in an apartment or rental?
Yes, in most cases. Installation involves connecting the reverse osmosis system to the cold water supply and drilling a hole in the sink for the dedicated faucet. If you are a tenant, the installation is reversible. However, it is advisable to inform your landlord.
Installation
Is the installation complicated?
No. Aquacycle reverse osmosis systems are designed for self-installation. Each order comes with detailed installation instructions and an accompanying video. If you encounter any difficulties, our technical department is available to assist you remotely, free of charge.
How does the installation work?
Two options to choose from:
- Guided self-installation (included with your order): You install the reverse osmosis system by following the instructions and video. If needed, our team will provide remote assistance by phone or video, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
- Professional home installation, optional: An installer can come to your home to install your reverse osmosis system. This option is available in the configurator, and its price is automatically displayed based on your situation.
Do you offer professional home installation?
Yes. Professional home installation is available depending on your location and the availability of our partner installers. Contact us to check feasibility in your area.
Maintenance and filters
How often should I change the filters?
Maintenance frequency depends on the model, your usage, and your water quality.
As a general rule:
- filters should be replaced every 12 months;
- the reverse osmosis membrane should be replaced every 24 months;
- a suitable maintenance kit is available for each model.
Aquacycle supports you with reminders to help you maintain your reverse osmosis system at the right time.
What happens if I don't replace the filters on time?
Lack of maintenance can lead to:
- a drop in the quality of filtered water;
- a slowdown in flow rate;
- a risk of contamination.
On the SMART and FLOW, an LED indicator signals when replacement is necessary. On the NANO, it is advisable to follow the annual schedule without waiting.
How do I maintain my reverse osmosis system?
Regular maintenance includes replacing the filters according to the recommended schedule and checking the fittings if in doubt.
Are maintenance kits available on the website?
Yes. Maintenance kits for NANO, SMART, FLOW and NOMAD are available directly on the website. They contain cartridges suitable for each model.
