A reverse osmosis filter requires a financial investment that often represents a barrier. <\/span>What's more, in the dynamic and fascinating world of water filtration, making the best filtration choice is a challenge. <\/span><\/p>\n

This article briefly compares the cost-effectiveness of reverse osmosis filtered water and bottled water.<\/span><\/p>\n

A reverse osmosis filter<\/a> is supplied with tap water, so this is the first factor to take into account when comparing costs. <\/span>Tap water isn't free, but in reality we mainly pay for the costs associated with its distribution and purification.<\/span><\/p>\n

We therefore benefit from an abundant natural resource, straight from the tap, at cost price: 0.006 EUR\/L (the highest price in Belgium).<\/span>
For the majority, the alternative to tap water is bottled water. Taking a six-pack of 1.5 L bottles as a reference, the average cost per liter of the best-selling brands in Belgium is 0.68 EUR\/L.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tap water is a good starting point, but it would be a pity for the basic element of life to be satisfied with its \"potability\". Would you be satisfied with eating a food simply because it's edible?<\/span><\/p>\n

So we're going to compare the profitability of filtered water with that of bottled water, in order to compare two quality waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Compare the cost of reverse osmosis-filtered tap water and bottled water.<\/u><\/span><\/h4>\n

The economic advantage of the osmosis unit lies in the fact that it uses tap water. However, acquiring an osmosis plant requires an initial investment and maintenance. Certain assumptions therefore need to be made in order to derive a fixed cost in cost\/liter terms:<\/span><\/p>\n

- Assumption 1:<\/em> a person consumes 1.5 L of drinking water\/day<\/span><\/p>\n

- Assumption 2:<\/em> a mid-range Aquacycle osmosis plant (best-seller) costs EUR 500 incl. VAT + installation EUR 200 incl. VAT = EUR 700 incl. VAT (*) (**)<\/span><\/p>\n

- Assumption 3:<\/em> the annual price of the filters is 100 EUR VAT incl. (***)<\/span><\/p>\n

- Assumption 4:<\/em> purchase and installation costs are amortized over 2 years (****)<\/span><\/p>\n

- Assumption 5:<\/em> the osmosis rejection rate is 0.5 L per liter filtered. In other words, for every liter filtered, 1.5 L is consumed. This is low, but has become the market standard for direct-flow reverse osmosis systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the fixed cost of installation and the reduced cost of tap water, we can see that a large household costs only slightly more than a small household.<\/span><\/p>\n

Visit less than 2 years<\/strong>A reverse osmosis filter becomes more cost-effective than bottled water. Households of 2 to 5 people are likely to save between 23 and 113 EUR\/month!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

After 2 years, once the cost of the osmosis unit has been amortized, profitability increases even further.<\/span><\/p>\n
